This may look like something out of an apocalypse, but do not be afraid. This is not the end of the world. However, this solar phenomenon, which you are looking at, can cause some effects on our planet. This Sun video was filmed by the NASA Solar Dynamics Observer on July 11. It was uploaded to YouTube by scientific journalist Tom Yulsman at Discover Magazine, which pointed to a strange black hole on the Sun.
This phenomenon is known as the coronal hole. As NASA explains, these holes are embedded in large cells of single-pole magnetic fields on the surface of the Sun; Their field lines extend far into the solar system. In essence, the magnetic field of the Sun opens and causes the flow of the solar wind to leave the crown, leaving a hole that appears darker than its fiery surroundings. This event can last weeks or even months.
As for the Earth, coronal holes can be a source of geomagnetic storms. Although the Earth’s magnetosphere can protect us from most of this geomagnetic activity, they have the potential to create greater auroral activity. Therefore, although it can not be strong enough to cause a real drama, it certainly hypnotizes the look.
